What We Talk About When We Talk About Stepan Bandera: A Rejoinder to Dovid Katz

Dovid Katz has had a long and distinguished career in reestablishing Jewish learning and Yiddishkeit in Lithuania and in fighting Shoah revisionism and denial across Eastern Europe. He deserves ample credit for both, so it is especially disappointing when he adopts, in his response to my article, the position that his—and our—enemies are his friends. “In other words,” he writes, “when it comes to the basic ethical issue of how we think about the Nazis and their local reliable killers, the bad guys are the good guys and the good guys are the bad guys.” Vladimir Putin, his allies in the Baltic states, and the eastern Ukrainian separatists are the “the good guys” in their rejection of an anti-Semitic Nazi collaborationist past, while the Ukrainian nationalists are “the bad guys.”more...

Konstanty Gebert, a hero of Poland’s Solidarity period and more recently of the movement to reinvigorate Jewish life in the country, presents a stark alternative in “The Ukrainian Question” (Summer 2014) that few others have dared to spell out:

Lithuania in the international media: from CIA prisons to the extermination of Jews
Fascist Lithuania will demand money from Russia for aggression, because the tramp “Balts” want to grab money in any way possible; the question of comparing the crimes of Nazism and Stalinism is marginalization of the Nazi Holocaust against the Jews and speculation on the facts of World War II. more...

Analysis: A sinister scheme to devalue the Holocaust is gathering steam
The question of how Lithuania deals with its Holocaust past has simmered for 18 years, ever since it gained independence. But in the past few weeks it has become crucial, due to Lithuania’s campaign to obtain recognition that Communism is the equivalent of Nazism. more...

Lithuania must stand up against anti-Semitism

IS LITHUANIA really persecuting Holocaust survivors as if they were war criminals? Not quite, but the story is still troubling. Shameful truth must be told
Wayne Stringer has done New Zealand a service. The former policeman has shown there was good evidence that Nazi war criminals came to New Zealand after the war. He has scotched the myth that the Simon Wiesenthal Centre's list of suspected war criminals was vacuous and the inquiry a waste of time and money. There was serious evidence that Jonas Pukas - a Lithuanian who settled in New Zealand after the war - was involved in massacres of Jews. At least one other man appears to have served in the Latvian equivalent of the murder squad to which Pukas belonged. Stringer has set the historical record straight. We now know what the evidence was - and it is deeply disturbing. more...

Marginal Notes: Calls from God and Prosecutors
Saulius Salterns
In addition to the lottery Pot of Gold, Lithuania was now offered another award - USD 10 thousand for betraying persons who might have participated in holocaust and genocide of Jews. The Lithuanian Government was also encouraged by Efraim Zuroff to contribute to the private initiative and start the fever of hunting for Jews' killers. And what would happen if Lithuanians eager to receive some money would recognize Efraim Zuroff, director of S. Wiesenthal Centre, as a severe supporter of anti-Semitism and conductor of genocide? The Lithuanian Premier A. Brazauskas thanked for the offer politely on TV and refused to allocate state money for the "hunt". A young Lithuanian expert of political science regretted that the award allocated by the Jewish centre might bring the relations of Lithuanian and Jews to a low and sad level, instigating mutual alienation and disagreement.

The author of the article compares the initiative announced by S. Wiesenthal Centre to the hunting for bears in Labanoras forest and shooting extinct lions in Sahara.
