Wiesenthal Center Rejects Claim of Illegality
of “Operation: Last Chance” in Hungary

The Simon Wiesenthal Center today totally rejected the charge by parliament ombudsman Attila Peterfalvi that “Operation: Last Chance” was engaged in illegal activity by examining information regarding crimes committed during the Holocaust in Hungary.

In a statement issued today in Jerusalem, the Center’s chief Nazi-hunter Dr. Efraim Zuroff, who coordinates “Operation: Last Chance” worldwide, termed the attempt to find a legal basis to stop the project “a pathetic effort to use an issue ostensibly linked to human rights to protect those who never had any concern for the human rights of their victims.”

According to Zuroff:

“The Wiesenthal Center’s project is already operational in eight different countries and its legality has hereto never been challenged. Apparently there are those in Hungary who are desperate to protect local Nazi war criminals and collaborators who have never been held accountable for their crimes. Such an effort only demonstrates how important the success of “Operation: Last Chance” is for Hungarian society and its ability to confront the complicity of Hungarians in the crimes of the Holocaust.”
